Jesus stars as the jealous Alfio in Helena Symphony’s premier of Mascagni’s verismo masterpiece.
This one-act opera may only be seventy-five minutes, but the story packs in family drama, infidelity, a duel, and even a couple of excellent drinking songs!
An ode to the common man, this piece zooms in on the intricacies of small-town life in nineteenth-century Sicily. Mascagni masterfully layers the beauty of the pastoral town on Easter morning with the strict behavoral codes of honor to which its inhabitants are bound. Whether facing an unfaithful spouse or a pregnancy outside of marriage, “cavalleria rusticana” or “rustic chivalry” reigns supreme.

Jesus Vicente Murillo stars as the lovable Papageno in Nashville Opera’s fresh production of Mozart’s timeless classic.
Mozart’s miraculous blend of the human and the supernatural, comedy and romance, draws us into a world where a prince, Tamino, and a princess, Pamina, triumph over every obstacle in their search for wisdom and enlightenment, and are finally united in love. This is a gloriously varied score, with the lovers’ soulful arias, the stratospheric vocal fireworks of the villainous Queen of the Night, the subterranean depths of the formidable high priest Sarastro, and the folk-like melodies of the lovable birdcatcher, Papageno.
Jesus Vicente Murillo stars as The Commentator in this modern American masterwork.
Derrick Wang’s delightful one-act opera Scalia/Ginsburg is inspired by two opera-loving, ideologically opposed Supreme Court justices who, trapped in purgatory, debate their legal opinions in song (and dance) in order to secure their freedom.
Jesus stars as the beloved barber in this incredible new production!

Iannis Xenakis (1922–2001) was a radically innovative composer. Violently persecuted for his leftist activism in the Greek Civil War that followed the Second World War, he fled Greece to live the rest of his life in Paris. One of the most explicit expressions of his resultant feelings of trauma, guilt, and displacement can be found in the vocal piece he called Kassandra (1987). This demanding work requires its two performers to enact and explore the alienation experienced by the prophet Cassandra in Aeschylus’ Agamemnon. Xenakis’ Kassandra is defined by a symbiotic relationship between percussionist and vocalist, by a simultaneously controlled and improvisatory score based on extracts from Aeschylus’ Agamemnon, and by a striking use of the baritone singer’s falsetto as well as his chest voice. These features of the piece mark out Cassandra as ‘other’ in her origins, her sex, and her language, while also hinting that her characteristics are not entirely foreign, but are in fact understood or even shared by the very communities that initially seemed to exclude her.
Featuring Bass-Baritone, Jesús Vicente Murillo as Kassandra/Chorus

She broke the mold. She burned the script. She dared to live and live hard.
Hardly any woman of the 20th century defined “fierce” like Frida Kahlo. And hardly any work captures the spirit of Frida as completely as this opera’s intricate and proud portrait of the iconic Mexican artist’s life.
A sensation in MOT’s 2014-2015 season, the Detroit production of Frida is considered one of the most powerful presentations of this authentic, inspiring opera. Frida returns with the original cast including Catalina Cuervo as Frida and Ricardo Herrera as Diego Rivera, and performed at Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, the original home for MOT.
Synopsis: Try to put Frida in a box: she’ll break it. Force her into a mold? She’ll smash it. Pressure her to endure hardship, pain, injury, hospitals, capitalism—she’ll burn them as fuel for painting after painting of beautiful, provocative art. And don’t even bother telling her who she can love.
Hardly any woman of the 20th century defined “fierce” like Frida Kahlo. And hardly any work captures the spirit of Frida as completely as this opera’s intricate and proud portrait of the iconic Mexican artist.
The story starts with her school-girl days and traces the dramatic series of events that led to her decision to live as a painter and marry fellow artist Diego Rivera. The couples’ tempestuous relationship unfolds in all its shadows and light as they travel to America, unsuccessfully mix with the titans of industry, and bear the grief of a miscarriage far from home. Frida dives into her art, creating a body of work that tells the story of her body, her soul, and her mind. She dares the world to witness her dangerous vulnerability and intimidating vitality — even to her final, glorious moments.
A sensation in MOT’s 2014-2015 season, Frida returns with the original cast, including Catalina Cuervo as Frida and Ricardo Herrera as Diego Rivera. Robert Xavier Rodríguez’s score, written for chamber orchestra, mixes mariachi-style orchestrations, classical opera, and hints of Mexican folk songs for an authentic, alluring musical reflection of the woman and her art. Performed at Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, MOT’s first home, this production honors a return to our roots.
Full of life, full of death, full of wonder, full of pain: Frida is an operatic ride of the most satisfying sort—a cyclorama of a woman who fulfills her most passionate desire to stay true to herself.
